Our Firm's Founder Was Born In 1872

Rentfro, Irwin, & Irwin, PLLC, is the most recent iteration of our firm that dates back to the 19th century.

R. B. Rentfro was born in Montgomery County in 1852. After receiving his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1872, he returned to Huntsville, Texas, where he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives.

In 1880, he moved his law practice from Montgomery County to Brownsville, where he entered into the firm of Wells and Rentfro. In 1890, he was appointed by President Harrison as a collector of customs for the Eagle Pass to Brazos Santiago District.

His son, also R. B. Rentfro, practiced law in Brownsville from 1896 until his death in 1953, during which time he concurrently served as mayor of Brownsville, city commissioner and county attorney.

R.B. Rentfro, Jr., was instrumental in the formation of the Brownsville Navigation District. He and H.L. Yates were named as the first attorneys for the District in 1929, and in 1930, R.B. Rentfro traveled to Washington, D.C., to present a petition to Congress to authorize creation of the Brownsville Navigation District.

He spent three months in Washington pushing his proposal through the legislative bodies. While he was away from Brownsville, he was elected as mayor. As a mayor, he helped secure the establishment of the Rio Grande Valley International Airport.

He headed the law firm Rentfro and Cole from 1912 to 1939, when he formed a partnership with his sons, Robert B. Rentfro and Russell Rentfro.

Daniel L. Rentfro, Sr., son of R.B. Rentfro, was born and raised in Brownsville. After graduating from St. Joseph Academy, he served his country with distinction in the European theater of World War II.

Daniel Sr. entered law school at the University of Texas after the war and returned to Brownsville where he practiced law and served the community for over 50 years. Both of his sons, Daniel L. Rentfro, Jr., and William Rentfro, joined the firm after receiving their law degrees from the University of Texas.

Our legacy continues into the 21st century with David Irwin and William J. "Bill" Irwin joining us in 2009 and 2011, respectively.
